It is characterized by hypoxemia and bilateral pulmonary infiltrates. Basically, this condition prevents oxygen from getting into the lungs because of the accumulation of fluids in the air sacs


  • Severe trauma
  • Severe infection or bacteremia
  • Aspiration
  • Acute pancreatitis
  • Near drowning
  • Chemical inhalation

Signs and Symptoms

  • Dyspnea
  • Hypotension
  • Shortness of breath
  • Anxiety
  • Agitation
  • Fever
